Joe Calzaghe tips Cleverly to bounce back

Legendary British boxer Joe Calzaghe has backed fellow Welshman Nathan Cleverly to bounce back from his defeat at the hands of Tony Bellew and become a champion once again.

However, the former undefeated world champion believes his compatriot will have a drop a weight class to manage that. Bellew scored a win via split decision against Cleverly last month in a Cruiserweight division match, avenging an earlier defeat he had suffered at the hands of the 26 year old.

Speaking to a British television channel, Calzaghe stated that Cleverly needs to come back to Light Heavyweight if he wants to become a champion in the future again and the young fighter agrees as well.

He has conceded that he has been thinking about a return to the Light Heavyweight fold following the defeat in Liverpool. He said that he was struggling to make it to the twelve rounds for the first time in his career in his new weight category and accepts the advice from Joe Calzaghe.

According to Calzaghe, Cleverly must be disappointed with the performance he put up. In essence, it was his first real fight in Cruiserweight in terms of it going all twelve rounds and he evidently struggled to make it through. He added that a fighter carries a lot of muscle in this category and that took away Cleverly’s two most important assets out of the game – speed and work rate.

Joe Calzaghe went on to add that he needs to look at how putting on weight takes his best assets out of the game and according to Calzaghe, Cleverly is best suited for Light Heavyweight.

Cleverly moved up to Cruiserweight in 2013 after his reign as the WBO Light Heavyweight champion ended unceremoniously at the hands of Sergey Kovalev in what was his first defeat.
